Alendronate reduces calcium loss from bones. It helps prevent bone loss and increases production of normal healthy bone in patients with Paget's disease, osteoporosis, and other conditions which place someone at risk for bone loss, including after menopause in females or from the long-term use of corticosteroids (like prednisone) in men or women. It has been shown to reverse bone loss, increase bone mass, and reduce fractures of the spine and hip. Common side effects include abdominal pain, nausea, and dyspepsia.

What is Generic Fosamax® (Alendronate) used for? Generic Fosamax® (Alendronate) is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis. Alendronate reduces bone turn over and prevents bone resorption without inhibiting osteoblastic bone formation, resulting in an increase in the bone mass.
No single clinical finding or test result can quantify risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis with certainty. However, clinical assessment can help to identify women at increased risk. Widely accepted risk factors include Caucasian or Asian descent, slender body b.i.d. early estrogen deficiency, smoking, alcohol consumption, low calcium diet, sedentary lifestyle, and family history of osteoporosis. How should generic Fosamax® (Alendronate) be used? Dosage: Treatment of Osteoporosis - 70 mg once a week
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor.
1. Take Alendronate once in a week on the prescribed day.
2. Swallow Alendronate tablet early in the morning before taking any food with plain water.
3. After swallowing Alendronate tablet, one should be in an erect posture -- standing, sitting or walking, this will help for better drug action and prevent oesophageal irritation.
4. Alendronate gives best action on an empty stomach only; take food or beverages 30 minutes after the administration.
5. Alendronate should not be taken at bed time. If administration of Alendronate is forgotten on the prescribed day take the same on the next morning and switch on to the original schedule there after.
6. Regular exercise, avoidance of alcohol, non-smoking, taking balanced diet, avoidance of excessive salt in-take, taking extra calcium and vitamin-D (on the doctor's advice) - these will assist in keeping your bones healthy. What special precautions should I follow? Patients should be well aware of information given below on this drug for better treatment :
If the patient comes across the oesophageal problems as mentioned above they should stop the administration of the drug forth with. Pain in the chest region or heart-burn or G.I tract problems which the patient may encounter any time. In these situations Alendronate should not be administered without proper Physician's advice.
Calcium content of the body should be tested before initiating treatment with Alendronate. Required amounts of minerals and vitamins (vitamin-D) should be ascertained in the patient concerned before starting the treatment.
It is important to have enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Ask your doctor if you have questions about your diet or about taking dietary supplements such as calcium or vitamin D. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor that you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Being immobile for long periods of time while taking this medicine may increase your risk of blood clots. During long periods of travel, get up and move around as often as possible. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
Before taking generic Fosamax® (Alendronate),
Women who are undergoing hormone replacement therapy when combined with Alendronate treatment, show significant increase in bone mass density.
Calcium and Antacid interfere with Alendronate this is also with the case of NSAIDs.
Physicians should be apprised of the different drugs consumed by the concerned patients who are taking Alendronate, for drug interactions & associated adverse effects. This also applies to patients who have Renal Insufficiency problem. It has been ascertained that no dose adjustment is necessary in patients with hepatic insufficiency.
Pregnant and Lactating women should consult the physician before taking Alendronate. So also the paediatric and elderly patients. What should I do if I forget a dose? IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it on the morning after you remember. DO NOT take 2 doses at once. What side effects can this medication cause? Side effects are not often encountered with Alendronate therapy. Mild abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, diarrhea, gastritis, headache, mild musculoskeletal pain may some times occur. In case any rare side effects were to occur, your physician should be apprised of the same.
CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience black or bloody stools; new, worsening, or severe heartburn; difficulty swallowing; pain upon swallowing; chest pain; or severe muscle, joint, or bone pain. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
