GENERIC PLAVIX® - CLOPIDOGREL 75MG - 100'S

Plavix is a registered brand name of Sanofi-Synthelabo Inc.

Clopidogrel Bisulfate (Generic Plavix®) is a medication that, when taken daily, can help reduce your risk of having a future heart attack or stroke. Clopidogrel is in a class of medications called antiplatelet drugs. It helps keep platelets in the blood from sticking together and thus works to prevent the formation of harmful blood clots. This helps protect you from a future heart attack or stroke.

It is recommended for people who have suffered from a recent heart attack or recent stroke, or who have peripheral artery disease (P.A.D.)-poor circulation in the legs that may cause pain during exercise, such as walking, and may be relieved by rest.

Clopidogrel Bisulfate (Generic Plavix®), taken with aspirin, is also recommended for people who have been hospitalized with heart-related chest pain or had a certain type of heart attack-conditions doctors call acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

What is Generic Plavix® (Clopidogrel) used for?

Generic Plavix® (clopidogrel bisulfate) is indicated for the reduction of atherosclerotic events (myocardial infarction, stroke, and vascular death) in patients with atherosclerosis documented by recent stroke, recent myocardial infarction, or established peripheral arterial disease.

How should generic Plavix® (Clopidogrel) be used?

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. The recommended dose of Clopidogrel is 75 mg once daily with or without food. No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients or patients with renal disease.

Keep taking Clopidogrel for as long as your doctor or healthcare professional prescribes it for you. Clopidogrel can prevent or treat atherosclerotic events only if you take it regularly. This is why it is important to get your refills on time so you do not run out of the medicine. Continue to take clopidogrel even if you feel well. Do not stop taking clopidogrel without talking to your doctor.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before taking clopidogrel,

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to clopidogrel or any other medications.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin); aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn); fluvastatin (Lescol); phenytoin (Dilantin); tamoxifen (Nolvadex); tolbutamide (Orinase); and torsemide (Demadex). Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver or kidney disease; any stomach problems, including ulcers; or bleeding in the brain.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking clopidogrel, call your doctor.

If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking clopidogrel.

Drug Interactions

Aspirin: Aspirin did not modify the clopidogrel- mediated inhibition of A.P. induced platelet aggregation. Clopidogrel potentiated the effect of aspirin on collagen- induced platelet aggregation. The safety of chronic concomitant administration of aspirin and Clopidogrel has not been established.

Heparin: Coadministration of heparin had no effect on inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by Plavix®. The safety of this combination has not been established, however, and concomitant use should be undertaken with caution.

Nonsteroidal Anti- Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): In healthy volunteers receiving naproxen, concomitant administration of Clopidogrel was associated with increased occult gastrointestinal blood loss. NSAIDs and Clopidogrel should be coadministered with caution.

Warfarin: The safety of the coadministration of Clopidogrel with warfarin has not been established. Consequently, concomitant administration of these two agents should be undertaken with caution.

Other Concomitant Therapy: No clinically significant pharmacodynamic interactions were observed when Clopidogrel was coadministered with atenolol, nifedipine, or both atenolol and nifedipine. The pharmacodynamic activity of Plavix® Clopidogrel was also not significantly influenced by the coadministration of phenobarbital, cimetidine or estrogen.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
